EDM Wire & Spark Erosion Services

EDM Wire & Spark Erosion Services

by The Toolroom Ltd (TTR).

High-precision Electrical Discharge Machining (EDM) for complex geometries, hardened steels, and intricate tool components.

When conventional machining reaches its limit, Electrical Discharge Machining (EDM) takes over. At The Toolroom Ltd (TTR), we provide specialist Wire EDM and Spark Erosion services from our Hartlepool facility. By using electrical discharges to erode material, we can achieve extreme precision on hardened metals without the risk of mechanical stress or thermal distortion.

Precision Wire EDM & Spark Erosion

Our EDM department is essential for the manufacture and maintenance of high-quality injection mould tools, press tools, and aerospace components. We offer a dual-approach to electrical machining:

1. CNC Wire EDM (Wire Erosion)

Using a fine, electrically charged brass wire, we “slice” through conductive materials with microscopic accuracy. This process is ideal for:

  • Complex Internal Profiles: Cutting intricate shapes, keyways, and splines.
  • Hardened Materials: Machining tool steels and exotic alloys after heat treatment to prevent warping.
  • Tight Tolerances: Achieving repeatable accuracy down to ±0.005mm.

2. CNC Spark Erosion (Sinker EDM)

Our Spark Erosion service utilises custom-machined graphite or copper electrodes to “sink” a specific shape into a workpiece. This is a critical process for:

  • Blind Cavities: Creating deep, complex pockets in mould tools that cannot be reached by a milling cutter.
  • Sharp Internal Corners: Producing “zero-radius” corners required for precision inserts.

Fine Surface Finishes: Delivering specific VDI textures directly onto the workpiece.

Why Choose The Toolroom Ltd for EDM?

Expertise in Hardened Tool Steels

We specialise in the “difficult.” Because we are toolmakers first, we understand the behaviour of hardened D2, P20, and H13 steels. We ensure that your EDM-profiled components maintain their structural integrity and dimensional stability.

Reduced Lead Times

By housing both Wire and Spark EDM “under one roof” alongside our CNC milling and turning departments, we eliminate the need for external sub-contracting. This keeps your project on a single site, reducing transport costs and lead times.

North East Excellence

Based in the North East, we support manufacturers across the UK with a reliable, “common-sense” approach to engineering. Whether it is a single emergency repair for a broken tool or a production run of complex components, we deliver on our promises.

EDM Wire & Spark Erosion – Frequently Asked Questions

The Toolroom Ltd (TTR)

What is Wire Erosion (EDM) and how does it work?

Wire Erosion, also known as Wire EDM (Electrical Discharge Machining), is a high-precision manufacturing process that uses a thin, electrically charged brass wire to cut through conductive materials. Unlike traditional milling, there is no physical contact between the tool and the workpiece, allowing for extreme accuracy and the ability to create intricate shapes that are otherwise impossible to machine.

What are the benefits of using Wire EDM for precision parts?

The primary benefits of Wire EDM include the ability to machine complex internal geometries, sharp internal corners, and extremely thin walls without distorting the material. Because the process is burr-free and exerts no mechanical force, it is the ideal choice for delicate components and high-precision toolmaking where tolerances of microns are required.

Can Wire Erosion cut through hardened steels and exotic metals?

Yes. One of the greatest advantages of Wire Erosion is that material hardness does not affect the cutting speed or accuracy. At The Toolroom Ltd, we frequently use EDM to machine hardened tool steels (H13, P20), carbide, titanium, and inconel, making it a vital service for the aerospace, medical, and subsea industries.

What industries typically require Wire EDM services?

ur UK-based Wire EDM services support sectors that demand 100% reliability and precision. This includes the Medical industry for surgical instruments, Aerospace for engine components, and the Automotive and Plastic Injection Moulding sectors for creating high-precision extrusion dies, punches, and core inserts.

What is the maximum workpiece size for your Wire Erosion machines?

Our Hartlepool facility is equipped with large-capacity EDM machines capable of handling workpieces up to 600mm x 400mm x 310mm and weights of up to 1000kg. This allow us to support both small, intricate electronic components and large-scale industrial bolster plates.

How accurate is Wire EDM compared to CNC Milling?

While CNC milling is excellent for bulk material removal, Wire EDM offers superior precision for fine details. We can achieve tolerances as tight as ±0.005mm with exceptional surface finishes (down to 0.2 Ra), often eliminating the need for secondary manual polishing or grinding.
